is Christopher Nolan's Odyssey like actually that good or is it just rated highly because it's Nolan and it's a 3h long movie so people are just generally more impressed and biased and therefore rate it highly because everybody else does? -

i've been trying to get back into the flow of filmwatching lately, finally checked out One Battle After Another and Sinners a while ago and needless to say, the latter was so so much better than the former. OBAA's writing just felt needlessly racist and was so tone deaf in its portrayal of leftists (not even talking about the circumstances in which the film was made: movie opens with a migrant detention camp raid yet they had to clear one to film one of the scenes; lots of performative leftist writing yet none of the characters ever address or mention the underlying socioeconomic problems outside of just chanting slogans and le unity). at least the third act hard carried that film. Sinners was an instant 5 star for me though, can't even begin to describe how sick that one is despite what should be a relatively simpler plot.

one reason i'm not too keen on checking out The Odyssey right now is its runtime. i wholly believe 2.5h should be like the upper limit for a film past which it's just needless stretching. like if you can't tell a story in that amount of time, either split it into two standalone feature films, or start cutting :shrug:

it's a nice spectacle, there's good scenes, but i didn't find the story interesting at all. so maybe i just don't like The Odyssey, completely independently of what Nolan did to it -

nolans odessey is a very interresting movie in the way a comic book movie can be a good movie. The story is interesting in the way it's told, we know what the odessey is but how can you tell it in a way that grips both the essence of the myth while also telling you something through how it's telling you the myth. The hero is always gonna save the day, but it's how he decides to do it, what him doing it looks/feels like, and the message the author is trying to portay through their itteration of the character that's interesting. -
