Everyone plays the same 10 maps all the time

something else that's compounded this issue lately is soldier's new anchor melee. to be clear, i fucking love the thing. it's so much more satisfying to crashland into a group of idiots rather than try to tap someone mid-blast jump with the market gardener. i use it at almost any opportunity i can, even in situations i know will probably get me killed, because it's just that satisfying

however

the "limited rotation" problem affects the anchor disproportionately compared to other weapons because many of the hyper-popular maps have very short skyboxes, or take place mostly indoors (2fort especially is bad for this) where it's almost impossible to max out the anchor's damage
even with the best timing i can manage, it never feels like i can hit the anchor's maximum damage potential

it's true that different weapons are better for different scenarios but there's no precedent for an entire weapon being made worse by the map itself (not even in live, either) this is yet another example of TF2C's cool and unique features suffering because of TF2 players adamantly refusing to try anything new

this is kind of an issue with TF2 players in general, not unique to TF2C. if you play any community server in Live frequently you will see a lot of very commonly picked maps because they're popular, like Uncletopia kinda just being Payload Simulator for the majority of the time. i've played pl_pier so much there that i have learned i actually really dislike the map's gameplay overall. people just tend to pick VIP mode a lot in this because VIP is unique to this game, but it's effectively the same as people picking Payload every single map vote or nominating Dustbowl every opportunity they can. the only way i can honestly see this being fixed is by getting a new map vote plugin or fixing the current one, because a majority of players are very casual and only play a little bit so of course they wanna play the maps that they know they like.

If it helps, I am the only one that ever nominates arena_watchtower and will exclusively vote for arena maps. I love arena and think that there's a lot more thought that you need to put into every individual play since any mistake means that you'll be sitting out.
I think that as of right now it would be worthwhile to have the different servers have different map rotations. Just make it so that control point maps (attack/defend, 5 point mainly) can't be played on the same server as VIP maps and split the two most common game modes that way.
Either that or make one server have a completely random map picked instead of allowing players to rtv. That would actually be pretty cool and on nights where multiple servers fill up it's not like people are going to leave because gravelpit was randomly picked.

There's an interesting idea. If the devs don't object I could definitely see us trying that on one of the standard servers. We'd probably have to disable or extend the RTV timeout though, otherwise you'd get pseudo-map-votes by people just RTVing any map they don't know or like.
