ok, so a classmate of mine has a failed HDD in her laptop. I've tried running the BIOS diagnostic tool and it gets stuck at the first HD test. The HD data is corrupted to the point where it will not let me run the on-board recovery program. Currently, I am trying to obtain said laptop so I can run a better diagnostic and possibly restore the HDD.

Situation: HDD failed, All important data is backed up to USB/DVD, restarts at windows splash, no difference in Safe Mode, on-board diagnostic fails at DSI short test, Advanced boot options has no recovery option.

Anyone have any suggestions before I simply format the thing and put on a fresh install of windows?

You could always see if the Ultimate Boot Disc has the HD diagnostic tools for it, or recovery. Is it making any noises? Also if it did corrupt this badly, it may be a good idea to look at a new HD anyways. Then redo on that guy.

dont have the boot disks or i would try it, forgot to mention that. As for noises, none that i can remember but i should have the comp by tomorrow so i can actually mess with it and take it apart

you will not merely look at it you will grab it and use it and be amazed at how great it is :)
