Hexalan:
on an unrelated note, does anyone have a recommendation for a first gun?
Dec 18, 2017 at 5:49 PM -
Reechard:
that's not a one-size-fits-all question.
Dec 18, 2017 at 5:50 PM -
Reechard:
what's the intended usage, what are your state laws, pistol or rifle or shotgun, defense or pleasure or hunting or mix?
Dec 18, 2017 at 6:47 PM -
Hexalan:
plinking, indiana (you'd know better than me), pistol or rifle, pleasure
Dec 18, 2017 at 6:57 PM -
Hexalan:
my dad's taken up target shooting with an air rifle and i've been implying that he should try an actual firearm, and now he's looking at them. it seems he's concerned with cost of ammunition and convenience of carrying it (carry in the literal sense of how convenient is it to pick up and shoot at a range, not O/C carry)
Dec 18, 2017 at 7:37 PM -
theLumberJack:
plinking?
Dec 18, 2017 at 7:38 PM -
VintagePC:
I presume that's taking potshots at stuff
Dec 18, 2017 at 7:40 PM -
VintagePC:
I'd assume the answer to the last part is that the best gun to shoot is the one that feels most comfortable while using it, so you'd probably have to go and try some out...
Dec 18, 2017 at 7:41 PM -
VintagePC:
... yes, I realize the irony of vintage giving advice on guns, I'll shut up now.
Dec 18, 2017 at 7:43 PM -
theLumberJack:
yeah penguins cant shoot things
Dec 18, 2017 at 7:50 PM -

To my credit I have done some air rifle and BB pistol shooting

i've got win7 installed on a vm, and now i'm trying to boot off a mint iso, but it's getting stuck on the loading screen
Dec 18, 2017 at 7:55 PM -
VintagePC:
as in it starts trying to boot and hangs, or you don't even get to the CD menu?
Dec 18, 2017 at 7:59 PM -
Hexalan:
Dec 18, 2017 at 7:59 PM -
VintagePC:
It's probably gotten better in the last few years but last I tried Win7 and linux were really bitchy about booting from UEFI/GPT partitions
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:00 PM -

Dec 18, 2017 at 8:01 PM -
VaultBot: are you a pleasure model?
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:01 PM -
Hexalan:
ok so before right now, i could select "Start Linux Mint" and it goes into a loading menu
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:02 PM -
Hexalan:
which would just show "Mint 18.3 [4 dots that occasionally changed from black to green]"
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:02 PM -
VintagePC:
Usually there if you push esc it'll show more detailed loading progress
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:03 PM -
VintagePC:
or if you push tab for advanced options and either edit the splash=??? thing to read splash=0 (or add it if not present)

esc and tab have failed to achieve progress
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:08 PM -
VintagePC:
well, you'd push tab on the menu, not on the ...
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:09 PM -
Hexalan:
ok, i've got "splash --", i'm not sure if that's good or bad
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:10 PM -
VintagePC:
delete the splash part
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:10 PM -
VintagePC:
then push enter or whatever it tells you to push to boot
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:10 PM -
Hexalan:
is that including the --
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:11 PM -
VintagePC:
try leaving the --. if you get an error, remove it too
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:17 PM -
Hexalan:
splash removed:

"Generating Locales. Generation complete." and then the blinking terminal underscore
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:18 PM -
Hexalan:
full of sound and fury, signifying nothing
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:20 PM -
VintagePC:
Is there more above on screen or just that?
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:22 PM -
Hexalan:
it used to be just blinking terminal underscore, but eventually "generating..." and "generation..." appeared and now the blinking terminal underscore is two lines lower
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:23 PM -
Hexalan:
but yes, that's all there is
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:24 PM -
VintagePC:
hm... can't say I really have any advice... sounds like hardware/driver incompatibility with vm
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:25 PM -
VintagePC:
can you get it to start if you make a new vm and configure it only for linux? (i.e. set linux as the OS, etc)
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:27 PM -
Hexalan:
yeah i got that working yesterday
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:27 PM -
Hexalan:
booted off the image and installed properly
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:28 PM -
VaultBot: need to go looking for info on that last response
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:28 PM -
VintagePC:
Definitely sounds like a conflict then
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:28 PM -
VintagePC:
compare the VM settings and see what differs
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:29 PM -
VintagePC:
if that fails I'd suspect win7 is setup for GPT partitioning and mint doesn't like it
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:30 PM -
VintagePC:
or the VM is set to use UEFI
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:43 PM -
Reechard:
Ruger 10/22, Marlin 795, Remington 597, Henry H001, Henry H003, uhhh
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:43 PM -
Reechard:
all of those are .22 multi-shot rifles
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:43 PM -
Reechard:
The Ruger 10/22 is like... "THE" .22 rifle. The Marlin and Remington coming in behind it.
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:44 PM -
Reechard:
but that's the one you'll find in every shop, with buckets and buckets of accessories available.
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:45 PM -
Reechard:
If he wants a pistol, a Walther P22 or a Ruger Mark II or Mark III are great.
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:45 PM -
Reechard:
also .22 plinkers.
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:45 PM -
Reechard:
If he wants a shotgun you can't go wrong with a Remington 870 or a Mossberg 500.
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:46 PM -
Reechard:
If he wants an actual rifle, Remington and Savage both make good 3-4rd bolt-action hunting rifles, in .30-06 or .308.
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:46 PM -
Reechard:
or a Marlin 336C in .30-30
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:47 PM -
Reechard:
and for home defense or "real" pistols, a Glock 9mm, Beretta 92FS 9mm, or "whatever feels good in your hand at the gun store"
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:47 PM -
Reechard:
I will forego my usual 1911 pistol in .45 recommendation because you are smol people.
Dec 18, 2017 at 8:48 PM -
Reechard:
at least I assume your dad is smol. I know you are.
