Geoff:
Question for anyone who knows computers well. So, my CPU has been overheating, especially when trying to record. Right now though, I've got the side off the computer and a regular fan pointed at the inside, and it's been working but my computer is now really loud when recording. Am I possibly ruining the CPU doing this?
Jul 6, 2016 2:51 PM -
TimeCrush:
What temp are you hitting when it gets noisy?
Jul 6, 2016 2:52 PM -
TimeCrush:
You should be able to google ____ CPU heat threshold and use your best judgement. If its running within 5 degrees of that its probably not doing well for it.
Jul 6, 2016 2:52 PM -
TimeCrush:
I recommend downloading http://openhardwaremonitor.org/
Jul 6, 2016 2:53 PM -
TimeCrush:
That will give you temp readouts and fan performance readings.
Jul 6, 2016 2:53 PM -
TimeCrush:
It your maxing out your fans, probably not good.
Jul 6, 2016 3:15 PM -
Geoff:
I only have the 1 fan inside it, and this pogram shows it constantly changing the max value.
Jul 6, 2016 3:19 PM -
TimeCrush:
Is it giving you a percentage of what the fan is running at?
Jul 6, 2016 3:22 PM -
TimeCrush:
There should be a 'current' and 'max' value. The max is how fast its seen it run since the program was opened.
Jul 6, 2016 3:48 PM -
Geoff:
Shows my fan's max right now is 2948, the value constantly changing.
Jul 6, 2016 3:50 PM -
TimeCrush:
Hm, I get a percentile readout as well.
Jul 6, 2016 3:50 PM -
TimeCrush:
Doesn't sound super cranked though, mine idles around 5k rpm
Jul 6, 2016 3:51 PM -
TimeCrush:
Again though, "_____ CPU Fan idle speed."
Jul 6, 2016 3:52 PM -
Geoff:
What I've been worried about is that normally, if I try to record DbD gameplay, I'll get maybe 10 minutes max before my cpu temp is too high and I'll shut down. With a regular floor fan pointed at my pc though, I can easily record with no issue. I jus don't know how safe that is. And let me google that quick

Jul 6, 2016 8:36 PM -
Razer: between work and hobbies, I've stayed busy.
Jul 6, 2016 8:36 PM -
Razer: and some of teh hobbies eat a lot of time
Jul 6, 2016 8:36 PM -
VintagePC:
between the two.... they take all the time in a day. I could probably say the same
Jul 6, 2016 8:36 PM -
VaultBot: hopefully tonight

Jul 6, 2016 8:40 PM -
Razer: not that I KNOW of, but its always possible. I dont remember his callsign
Jul 6, 2016 8:40 PM -
VintagePC:

Jul 6, 2016 8:41 PM -
Razer: of course, there's only a few dozen tens of thousands of us in teh US.
Jul 6, 2016 8:41 PM -
VintagePC:
true... though I don't know if you two ever discussed it in private and chatted
Jul 6, 2016 8:42 PM -
Razer: we had discussed it once or twice, but I didn't have a HF radio at the time.
Jul 6, 2016 8:42 PM -
VintagePC:
ah
Jul 6, 2016 8:42 PM -
Razer: I've progressed a bit since the last time I was here.
Jul 6, 2016 8:43 PM -
VintagePC:
good to hear
Jul 6, 2016 8:44 PM -
Razer: whats new 'round here?
Jul 6, 2016 8:45 PM -
VintagePC:
well, we're the official hosts/partners of the TF2Classic mod
Jul 6, 2016 8:45 PM -
VintagePC:
http://tf2classic.com
Jul 6, 2016 8:46 PM -
VintagePC:
couple of random retro half-life mod servers
Jul 6, 2016 8:47 PM -
Razer: Interesting
Jul 6, 2016 8:47 PM -
VintagePC:
and other than that we're still here
Jul 6, 2016 8:48 PM -
VintagePC:
not much new coming out in the way of third-party dedicated hostable servers
Jul 6, 2016 8:48 PM -
VintagePC:
everything these days is either P2P or you only really have a chance of getting a playerbase if you pay for a server from an official provider
Jul 6, 2016 8:49 PM -
VintagePC:
cause ranking and all that stuff
Jul 6, 2016 8:49 PM -
Razer: yup
Jul 6, 2016 8:50 PM -
Razer: I'm surprised there's no UT servers up there
Jul 6, 2016 8:50 PM -
VintagePC:
we've also moved away from TF2 as a result of how valve has done nothing on the quicplay front
Jul 6, 2016 8:50 PM -
VintagePC:
*quickplay
Jul 6, 2016 8:51 PM -
VintagePC:
We had a few UT ones a while ago but put them in storage cause they just sat empty
Jul 6, 2016 8:51 PM -
Razer: Yeah, but that has been coming for years.
Jul 6, 2016 8:51 PM -
Razer: I musta missed 'em then.
Jul 6, 2016 8:52 PM -
VintagePC:
Like many of our things... once the initial novelty wears off, it's a ghost town
Jul 6, 2016 8:52 PM -
VintagePC:
FoF used to be pretty popular
Jul 6, 2016 8:53 PM -
Razer: I tried it a month after it came out, was actually kinda disapointed.
Jul 6, 2016 8:53 PM -
VintagePC:
but starting a community around anything is a chore in and of itself these days... seems those days are long gone
Jul 6, 2016 8:54 PM -
Razer: Unfortunately, true.
Jul 6, 2016 8:56 PM -
Razer: what really needs to happen is a game based on communities
Jul 6, 2016 8:57 PM -
VintagePC:
yeah... no great moddable games are out that I'm aware of... that's what made TF2 so popular for so long
Jul 6, 2016 8:57 PM -
Razer: I'm pretty sure that what made TF2 work, first and foremost, was its simplicity.
Jul 6, 2016 8:57 PM -
VintagePC:
sadly... then quickplay and serverfarms came along, abuse was rampant, and communities got the short end of the stick
Jul 6, 2016 8:58 PM -
VintagePC:
that's a valid point
Jul 6, 2016 8:59 PM -
Razer: I honestly think the decline started not long after teh pyro update
Jul 6, 2016 9:00 PM -
VintagePC:
the simplicity went around that time, yeah
Jul 6, 2016 9:00 PM -
Razer: well, that, and all of the nerfs that they did over teh years.
Jul 6, 2016 9:01 PM -
VintagePC:
it was near impossible to stay on top of all the content and gameplay changes
Jul 6, 2016 9:01 PM -
Razer: yup. and you had no choice, even if you liked the old version better.
Jul 6, 2016 9:02 PM -
VintagePC:
it's just gotten worse with all the promo crap and rabitrary new weapons
Jul 6, 2016 9:02 PM -
VintagePC:
enter tf2classic
Jul 6, 2016 9:02 PM -
Razer: So, faced with either playing something that was no longer what they liked, or finding something else to play, the players went elsewhere.
Jul 6, 2016 9:02 PM -
VintagePC:
yup
Jul 6, 2016 9:03 PM -
VintagePC:
and then the other changes killed off the diehard fans/communities that kept them alive
Jul 6, 2016 9:03 PM -
Razer: yup
Jul 6, 2016 9:03 PM -
Razer: the whole hatfortress scandle.
Jul 6, 2016 9:03 PM -
VintagePC:
mhm
Jul 6, 2016 9:04 PM -
VintagePC:
tf2c has a shot if they don't go that route. Still in beta but we're hoping the word will spread
Jul 6, 2016 9:04 PM -
VintagePC:
being based on the 2007 OB tf2
Jul 6, 2016 9:05 PM -
Razer: well, looking at their website, I have hope for them, but I can see it creeping in that way.
Jul 6, 2016 9:05 PM -
VintagePC:
yeah
Jul 6, 2016 9:05 PM -
Razer: Hell, I miss the original weapons update.
