Smartphone App recommendations

Post your app recommendations here. After all, a smarthphone is only as smart as you make it.

Please post anything, even if it sounds obvious. It might not be obvious to everyone. I just found out about DropBox last year and I <3 it.

Spotify. ($9.99/month) I love it. Never listen to the radio again. You can pick stations, and it even has comedy and books. You can download songs to play offline and sync your local files to upload to Spotify's servers.

Amazon App Store (Free) Basically the same as Google's Play Store, except every day they have a new featured Free App Of The Day. You can purchase a paid app for $0.00 and it will stay on your account forever, ready to be redownloaded whenever you want. Pretty much 95% of the apps are worthless or feature in-app-purchases, but every couple of weeks a great one comes through.

SwiftKey ($3.99) Makes typing faster. It smart predicts the word you are about to type as you type it, and even has a great auto correct feature if you spell a word wrong. It can sync with your Facebook, Gmail, and Facebook to learn your typing traits and copy it.

Skyfire Web Browser (free) I love it because it loads a lot of pages other web browsers have problems with.

Xparent Tapatalk ($2.99) For forum users. Helps display forums correctly on a mobile device. PLEASE If you get this app go into settings and turn off automatic signature. It will always post at the bottom of your post what device you are on. Nobody cares and it clutters up the interwebs. We already have enough as it is.

RedLaser Barcode & QR Scanner (free) Scan a barcode on an item (or type it in if your camera has trouble picking it up) and it will search the Internet and local places and lists their prices. It also gives local results, related items, and reviews. It will even give you the number of the local store so you can call to verify. Great for price matching when you shop.

Here is one of my favorties.

Out of Milk (Google Play Store) : If you are absent minded, or have a wife that is always asking you to pick things up this is a good app/tool for you. It has a to-do list that you can update or anyone synced up with the same list can update.

- So imagine a large family and you are out of Milk (just like the app name haha) someone can update the list on the app and it will appear on everybodys list so someone can pick milk up when they are out and about. Then they can check it off as done so nobody else gets it.

- It also has a deals section where it will show you local sales for grocery stores near you that you can quickly add to your shopping list with a long hold on the item.

- It also has a pantry list, so you can update on the list how much of what you have left in the house so if you are ever wondering while out at a store how much beef you have left you can take a quick look at the app. Also comes with a nifty bar code scanner for quickly adding items to your list.

This would be handy as hell if my bf will actually use it!! I almost always forget things that he neglects to tell me he's low on (deodorant, razors, shampoo/conditionor....) and when he runs out he's like FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!! and all I can say is...."Dude you didn't tell me shit!!"

I am so gonna haveta get this for us so he can give me lists of things I need to pick up!!

This seems to be a personal opinion, as my signature on tapatalk, is a bit funny. And yes you can customize the signature.

Now if you're an avid TeamSpeak user there is a TeamSpeak 3 app.

Audible - Free Download and listen to you audiobooks from Audible.com

Dropbox, Google Drive, Both free downloads, and both have same reasons to have them, Online storage of things, though Google Drive doesn't require you to install, until Dropbox

Google Chrome - I hate the default browser on my phone, and was happy when I learned Chrome had came out for Android.

Also now looking at root access apps.

These apps require root access.
Sixaxis Controller
Let's you use a PS3 controller to play emulators.

Requires Root:
AdAway. Blocks ads at the host level. Google didn't like it so they removed the app. You have to download the F-Droid store and install it from there.
http://code.google.com/p/ad-away/

This app works. Careful, it may interfere with some free games that require you to click "Close" on an Ad to continue. Screw those games anyway!

I'd consider it a must-have, especially with the price of smartphone data connections, every user should have the right to have a say in what bits go over that connection.

Requires Root:
Bluez IME (free). Lets you use certain Bluetooth controllers. Download the beta BluezIME-v1.17-minSdk-8-WiimoteFixes.apk in this thread to be able to use WiiMote controllers. Works like a charm!

Got a new phone and was again looking into apps.

A cool thing I found is Xposed Launcher. http://repo.xposed.info/module/de.robv.android.xposed.installer

It requires root. When you install it you can add additional modules to give your phone tweaks. Only recommended for experienced users. You should definitely back up your Stock or ROM before making major changes.

Note: Xposed Launcher does not have any tweaks. It only lets you install other modules to use those tweaks.

Smart IR Remote
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.remotefairy

Any universal remote really. This one requires an IR blaster in your phone. If your phone doesn't have one then you can get an IR adapter for $10-20. Use this app to control all your devices at home. Set up a task so with 1 push of a button you can turn on your TV, blu-ray player, and surround sound at the same time. Use your remote on the go to change TVs in bars, waiting rooms, what have you.

XPrivacy
(requires Root, requires Xposed Installer)

Why does the Facebook app need to see your calendar, phones, and texts? This app will let you restrict specific permissions from individual apps. Not just block those permissions, as some apps got smart and now force close when you block them. This app feeds them fake data. If they ask for your location it gives a fake one, and if it asks for your contact list it says you have 0 contacts.

and people wonder why I refuse to have anything to do with derpbook. First thing I did on rooting was nuke it from orbit.

Root Cloak
(requires root, requires Xposed installer)

Let's you hide sepcific apps from seeing your root status. Some apps are not working if you have root. This is more common for carrier specific apps, but more apps on the Play Store are also stop working if you have root access. This hides it from them.
