What would you like to see most?

Just to throw a weird and different suggestion out there, Trackmania 2 Stadium.

I always thought Mount and Blade: Warband would make for a badass server, but is seems overly complicated to populate/keep going.

Noted. :)

I think everyone hating on MC is trying to make it make money. If it doesn't take up too much resources why not just let it live so people that ENJOY the game can play it? The problem all the other servers had was everyone wanted it to be some HUGE thing and to take off. Just let it be a fun server that people can pop into and play on when they want.

it doesn't take up too much resources

This is the problem. An *idle* MC server takes like 5GB RAM, and the world itself (after people populate it for that initial week and explore the crap out of it) is 2-6GB of storage space, with every backup taking that much space as well. It's a giant resource hog, and the last 2 servers we had didn't even have the cash stores installed on them, we gave up on that because it was a bunch of microtransactions that paypal ate. We don't even care about money anymore (see the other post), it's time investment for nothing at this point. I think that's what ends up getting to us the most, putting a bunch of man-hours into setting up a server and then having it populated for a week before it goes away.

That being said, I almost think a vanilla creative box would be best. It would take no management, we could set it to erase once every month or two, reset itself, would take no management, and even if it was no-whitelist the griefing would disappear soon after.

I could just list so many reasons against all the proposed minecraft ideas so far

...I was so pissed off that none of you tried to salvage the server that you all fucking decided instead to just reset it, even though someone had been working on his house over 10 fucking months and had been constantly re-assured that we have backups in case something bad happens.

You have valid points. and that's exactly why I put up this discussion thread to see where people stand on options, throw out ideas, and see where it goes.

Was this tekkit or a later server?

Finally, given that I'm not hearing a whole lot of sway one way or the other for new suggestions (apart from "NO MINECRAFT") so right now I'm thinking of just working through the list of suggestions, and casually throw stuff at the wall, and see what sticks. I'm not gonna devote a lot of time/energy to making stuff work unless I get a better concensus about what our next server project should be.

So, instead of bashing other people's requests and ways I can possibly make them work, can we PLEASE try to get this topic back on track in terms of what people WOULD like to see, not what people DON'T?

it was both. the dome screenshots i linked took about 1 year on the survival server logging 3-4 hours daily. The towers with circular wall was tekkit, and that one took like 3 months with the same daily average.

and yeah sorry for being so bashy. This community and minecraft still touches a nerve with me.

To be constructive, its hard to actually think of games I would ever find myself playing that are private server based and legal. I mean I'd send you homemade cookies once a month for the rest of your life if you found a way to make our own vanilla Star Wars Galaxies server (one with the 2month patch that stabilized the game, but none of the future patches as they were just unbalanced re-balancing attempts that resulted in "flavor of the month" OP builds.). Or if you could make us our own private World of Warcraft vanilla server. Neither of these I believe are legal options though.

There's an open-source SW:G server being built, but it's nowhere near completion. That one I'd feel way more comfortable about than WoW because it's at least a dead game that we wouldn't get sued for 90 bajillion dollars over.

As for your houses getting destroyed..... I'm pretty sure I still have copies of both of those maps, but please remember that the SMP map was "Fragtopia" and was an FFN server that *I* was not allowed to touch because it was Mak's special baby that he set up, configured, and installed mods for, half of which became out of date after the 4th or 18th update or so, causing huge problems trying to keep the server up to date while also having it still work....

Tekkit also had the thing where the devs of various mods had that huge pissing match to see who could piss each other off the most, causing ti to split off into "Tekkit Legacy" and "New Fancy Improved Tekkit", with tekkit legacy being left as a broken pile of poop :-/ I still miss tekkit sometimes, but there's no way at all for us to get it to work properly. If we set up a new SMP server at some point I'd definitely consider trying to load your old SMP house into it, because that thing was glorious.

Edit: I don't want this to sound like I just blew these off because the devs were shitty about them and broke them on me. I don't think you can even understand how many hours I put into these 2 servers to keep them maintaned even at the half-broken level they were for so long. If I had been getting paid for it, I'd be living in a house that I'd paid for cash in hand. Running heavily modded minecraft servers is like having a 2nd job. I wish the Mojang team would stop fucking touching it so we have a good point to work from, but all the little micro-updates that don't do anything but break shit..... FUCK.

Problem is, at least when it comes to me, that some people go through phases with games. I used to play Planetside 2 ALOT then all the sudden i haven't played it seriously for awhile. I'll touch minecraft here and there sometimes but i haven't played it like i used to on our old tekkit or ftb server.

I could just list so many reasons against all the proposed minecraft ideas so far

1. a paywall to a server that is not actively administrated is a troll's wet dream, not a troll deterrent.
2. our most trusted members have been the key reasons in the past for resetting minecraft servers. Mycheese, Textercist, and a few other names I can't remember because I was so pissed off that none of you tried to salvage the server that you all fucking decided instead to just reset it, even though someone had been working on his house over 10 fucking months and had been constantly re-assured that we have backups in case something bad happens. So expecting a server of just community members without any administration to float without monthly resets is fucking naive
3. People will ask for it, they will always ask for it. but watch what those people do when they get what they ask for. They will play it for 1 week and get bored and leave. As one of the only FFN members that has stayed active on the first 4 reincarnations of our servers over the years I can safely say that aside from myself, and maybe one random person no one knows EVERYONE abandons the server after the first month because the novelty wears off.
4. those same motherfuckers in reason 3 then come back 4+ months later begging to have the server reset because its not as fun anymore, or a new mod came out that would require a new map, or there was an update that requires a new map.

Go ahead and ask if I'm bitter about how we've ran minecraft in the past. Those screenshots should emphatically reinforce the YES that I'm saying here.

I feel for you BFIM cuz it sucks that you built something that huge and then it got destroyed. But imho thats the nature of the beast that is minecraft, unless its on a creative server you have to expect that shit is going to get wiped, reset, and changed. Look at how much HUGE fucking buildings I built and I never once got mad when one got destroyed/reset. Thats what makes Minecraft fun. I think if a new server is made it needs to be a true open server where griefing and shit is going to happen and every 3 months shit gets reset. 3 months to try and build something truly fucking awesome in a world where trolls and asshats are constantly able to fuck it up. Maybe we could even make a game out of that aspect alone? After 3 months everyone submits a screenshot(s) of their creations and a thread is formed and everyone votes on it and the winner of the most Creative,Ballsy, and most hidden(?) get some kind of prize or reward or something. I think this idea could be insane amounts of fun.

interesting ideas... they have been noted. :)

I could really get behind that idea Wicked! I like it!

Think about it, its truly enough time to try and build something truly amazing and hidden so that others dont fuck with it. 3 months is a good amount of time to build something very large and then the server resets. And maybe as an ode to whoever wins, when the server is reset the spawn point(beginning area) is that persons design. There could be issues with cross updates but its an idea and something I really think people would find cool to have something they built be the beginning area. I sure as hell know I thought it was cool having everyone see my churches every time they came to the server, lol.

just to point something out on that an idle ftb server setup properly takes up 580mb and at 20 people takes up 1.9gb and after 4 months of people on that server the map itself was 3.8gb with an area explored that would take you 6 hours to walk from west to east and 4 hours from north to south and the backups where about 1gb each keeping 5 hourly backups and 3 daily backups and 1 monthly backup(for dynmap reasons to make something pretty at the end of a 6 month period)

but anyway the ftb server i run that has that is using mcpc as server wrapper which is a combination of spigot bukkit and forge combining the best of all 3 allowing plugins and mods to work without lag and without a lot of memory usage :)

Memory usage wasn't the problem for us... it was the CPU usage that went through the roof when EVERYONE had stuff going and chunk loaders while they're not online.

Honestly if you DID do a Minecraft server again... Most i would say is have a SMALL central hub for people starting then the rest is the wild west whatever happens happens. It would give it a bit more danger from your fellow gamer vs just mobs.

Besides we all basically all just play LoL anyways plus its the same people on TS all the time so Idk what larger group of people you guys are catering to.

I think where our minecraft lost its way was that it became "too" serious and involved. People got really obsessed with their stuff, buildings, and personal areas... and when that happens, your server goes from a place where people come to hang out with friends, derp around, and have fun to all srs face and "touch my stuff you die".
