Pc Issues

Geoff

Sir "Let's Play"
So, I've had a few issues since I've returned home.

First, my internet. Now, I can handle the internet going slow every once in awhile. But every damn day around 11PM till about 5-6 AM, my internet speed ALWAYS goes to the max speed (6mb). Last night? No. It stayed at about .05. Yeah, that's a pathetic number that allows me to do NOTHING. I don't know what the hell happened to change this.

Second, my computer has been freezing when connected TO the internet. wtf? My pc was fine before I left, now it's starting to piss me off.

Third, after it started freezing and what not, I did shut the whole thing down and then when I started it up, I heard clicking noises and the screen stayed black with a white line blinking. So, I held the power button and it basically restarted itself and hasn't done that clicking sound since then. But I'm a bit scared my hard drive is failing.

If the speed drop issue persists, it may be local network abuse. I has an issue like this a few months ago where every evening my network speeds (especially upload) would bottom out and it turned out to be someone in my area torrenting like a boss.

No idea on that second count.

Click is often a definite sign of hard drive failure. I would do a backup of everything that matters to you just in case.

Interesting enough, the speed drop did happen to occur right when my sister got her new laptop, but when it happens during the times where my internet SHOULD be at max speed and no one is awake, no laptop is on...something is full of BS. As for other people using my internet, I highly doubt it.

I assumed most would say that the freezing pc is the cause of some bs virus. Although I've learned from the past how to not even get viruses, I'm currently doing a check with Avira.

Yeah, my brother told me to do a backup and get a new hard drive just in case. So...time to transfer over a bunch of games.

Doesn't have to be your internet, any one of your neigbours could be doing something that saturates the local exchange you're connected to, and thereby killing your speed. Especially common in cable-based setups.

I thought that was more common in DSL setups...
DSL you have a direct line to the exchange (aka your phone line). Cable actually has a single line that taps off at each house, owing to how the tv cables were run. Unless you set it up very well, a few people can saturate the entire line.

So, I figured I'd try changing the password to the wireless network, therefore forcing everyone on the connection off of it. For some strange reason, when I change the password, the entire connection goes to "Limited Usage" or something for me. =/

And my speed stayed below dial up speeds last night, so that's frustrating. I need to get to backing my games up and just get a new hard drive. Who knows, a fresh new start might change things.

Well, just got the dreaded BLUE screen. Was simply reading questionablecontent and BAM, blue screen. PC restarted itself...

Do the usual: disk cleanup, disk check, defrag check (defrag if ness.), virus scan (AVG please). Check for recent updates (OS and drivers) and rollback if problems occurred soon after they were installed; conversely update everything if ness..
Click issue can be as others mentioned HDD failure, but once that starts the decline is typically rapid and noticeable. Can also be a PSU issue if not enough power is being supplied.
The internet issue is really tough to diagnose and fix. Others mentioned that you're neighbors are probably saturating the node you're connected to. Solution: new neighbors. You can also try releasing your IP and renewing to get a new IP (roll). Also, a modem and router reboot (unplug both, replug modem first, wait, then router). Routers can sometimes get "clogged" with an inaccurate connections list and there can only be so many connections to your router.

Strangely, the click issue only happened once. Hasn't occurred since. I figured the blue screen was actually a part of the hard drive failing but I may be wrong. The internet thing...has stopped. I hate to jinx myself, but as of right now, it is back to normal. I'm confused in every way and also happy. In any event, all my games are backed up. 90gb worth. I figure it is best to be safe.

Modem and router are the same thing, and I've reset it multiple times, it never changed anything.

Imagine that. Flood happened, everything was off for 30ish hours. Pc freezes every few seconds when online...

CTRL+SHIFT+ESC, see what's spiking to 100% cpu usage when it freezes.

I would also check to make sure this isn't an isolated issue with only your network/computer

more of a technical question, but does the browser freeze or is it all the programs you are running that freeze?

Freeze may be the wrong word. Stutters seems more appropriate. but yes, Ill be watching a show and it stutters like mad if I try loading anything online.

what program or service are you using? (Netfix, Youtube, ect.) I assume by stutter you mean your connection speed drops drastically. Did you make any hardware/software changes before this stuttering started to occur?

Apologies for all the questions but trying to narrow this down as much as I can.

When it happens, ill show record with my phone. Edit: Annoyingly, it only happens when I don't try to record it, and when I start recording, it stops. =P I'll try to find a youtube video that has the same issues.

Also, wireless card is completely up to date, driver wise. I really wish it would just go away. =(

So, the "freezing/stutter/lag" is gone. My internet is not full capacity, but it is returning. Interesting.
