he literally built a 4-bit CPU out of all vacuum tubes

to be fair though it probably would have miniaturized quite a bit as well

the transistor ended up winning out but towards the tail end of the tube era you had compactrons which started being the tube equivalent of ICs with multiple functions, and the NuVistor which was basically a tiny little vacuum tube the size of a jelly bean
